We all know that as we start to age things can “slow down” a bit. We sometimes feel weaker. We may tire more quickly, or even feel our coordination and balance start to diminish. And the older we get the more these effects amplify. What is important to know however is that the sooner and more consistently you fight the effects of aging the less they effect your health in the years to come. So in this regard I am going to make a recommendation. Yes, it’s Muay Thai. Many people over 40 would probably shy away from Kickboxing as an option to battle the effects of aging and move on to more conventional approaches. But while things like getting on a treadmill, or weight lifting can be great endeavors you will find that for the aging body a safe and responsible Muay Thai program can actually provide many benefits the other forms of exercise do not offer.
In addition to improving strength and speed a regular Muay Thai regiment improves coordination. Studies have shown that the neuromuscular benefits of Kickboxing are tremendous. The diverse nature of the techniques and timing required improves communication between the muscles and the brain, thereby fighting the problems with mobility and balance that comes with aging.
Muay Thai also significantly improves balance. A good Muay Thai class calls on the two specific types of balance your body uses. Anticipatory and reactive. Muay Thai classes require seeing what is coming and reacting to it over and over again. This specific type of repetition increases over all stabilization, and reduces risks of falls and injuries as we age.
While people over 40 may think that Muay Thai is not a safe way to gain better balance and coordination, the truth is that a responsible Muay Thai coach can provide a perfectly secure environment where these benefits along with so many others are possible. Take the time to find a Muay Thai school near you. And if you live in Sonoma county drop by the PHAS3 Training Center for a free session. As we move up in age we truly owe it to ourselves.
